Description

Indulge in the comforting flavors of sweet caramelized onions and apples paired with gooey melted cheese in this delicious Trench Onion and Apple Grilled Cheese sandwich. Perfect for a cozy lunch or dinner option!

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 small apple (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji, thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or a pinch of dried thyme)
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 4 ounces sharp white cheddar cheese (sliced or shredded)
  • 2 ounces Gruyère cheese (sliced or shredded)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter for grilling

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onion and Apple: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onion and cook until soft and caramelized, about 12 to 15 minutes. Add the apple slices and thyme, cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. Assemble Sandwiches: Spread Dijon mustard on two bread slices if desired. Divide cheddar and Gruyère cheese among slices. Spoon onion and apple mixture on top, then cover with remaining bread slices to form sandwiches.
  3. Grill Sandwiches: Spread outsides with softened butter. Cook in a skillet over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • Try using smoked Gouda for a smoky flavor twist.
  • Pairs well with tomato soup or a green salad.
