Ingredients

Bread:

6 cups cubed day-old bread (French or sourdough recommended)

Seasoning:

1 tablespoon olive oil or butter, 1 small onion (diced), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning

Proteins:

1 cup cooked sausage or diced ham

Cheese:

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Custard:

6 large eggs, 2 cups whole milk

Garnish:

chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Sauté Onion: In a skillet, sauté the diced onion in olive oil or butter until soft. Set aside.
  3. Prepare Custard Mixture: In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme. Add bread, sausage/ham, onion, and cheeses. Mix gently.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Transfer mixture to the baking dish, press down, let it rest, then bake for 45–50 minutes until set.
  5. Rest and Serve: Let it rest before slicing. Garnish with parsley if desired.
