Description

Deliciously simple roasted turnips, seasoned with olive oil, sea salt, paprika, black pepper, and garlic powder, then perfectly caramelized in the oven. A healthy and flavorful side dish that pairs well with a variety of meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 ½ pounds turnips

Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: chopped herbs like parsley or oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for roasting the turnips.
  2. Prepare the turnips: Using a sharp knife, slice off the tops and bases of the turnips, then chop them into uniform ½-inch pieces for even cooking.
  3. Season the turnips: Place the diced turnips on a parchment or foil-lined baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle evenly with sea salt, paprika, ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Toss well to ensure all pieces are coated.
  4. Arrange for roasting: Spread the seasoned turnips out on the baking sheet in a single layer, making sure pieces are not crowded to allow proper caramelization.
  5. Roast: Place in the preheated oven and roast for 30 minutes until the turnips are tender and slightly golden brown around the edges.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately, optionally garnished with freshly chopped herbs such as parsley or oregano for added flavor and freshness.

Notes

  • Cut turnips into even pieces to ensure uniform cooking.
  • Use fresh herbs to enhance the flavor if desired.
  • For a softer texture, you can cover the pan with foil for the first 15 minutes and then uncover to brown.
  • Turnips can be swapped with rutabaga or other root vegetables for variety.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
