Description

A delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese, this Pizza Grilled Cheese recipe combines gooey mozzarella, tangy pizza sauce, and spicy pepperoni between buttery toasted bread for a fun and easy meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 slices Italian or sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Filling

  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce (plus more for dipping)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices pepperoni
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread, ensuring full coverage for a golden crust when cooked.
  2. Assemble the sandwich: On the unbuttered sides of two slices, spread a generous layer of pizza sauce. Layer mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, grated Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and optional crushed red pepper flakes evenly over the sauce.
  3. Complete the sandwich: Place the remaining slices of bread on top with the buttered side facing out to prepare for grilling.
  4. Cook the sandwiches: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is beautifully golden brown and the cheese has melted completely.
  5. Serve: Slice the sandwiches in half and serve warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping, enjoying the melty, savory combination.

Notes

  • Customize with additional pizza toppings like cooked sausage, mushrooms, or olives for more variety.
  • If you don’t have pizza sauce, marinara sauce can be used as a substitute.
  • To achieve a crispier crust without burning the bread, cook over medium-low heat to allow the cheese to fully melt.
