Description

This Lamb Gyros recipe features seasoned ground lamb cooked to perfection and served warm on pita bread with classic Mediterranean toppings like tzatziki sauce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and feta cheese. A quick and flavorful main course that brings the authentic taste of Greek street food right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Lamb:

  • 1 pound ground lamb
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For Serving:

  • 4 warm pita breads
  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season the Lamb: In a medium bowl, combine ground lamb with oregano, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all spices are evenly distributed throughout the meat.
  2. Cook the Lamb: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the seasoned lamb and cook, breaking it up with a spoon or spatula as it cooks. Continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes until the lamb is fully cooked through and has crispy edges for added texture.
  3. Warm the Pitas: Warm the pita breads either in a dry skillet over medium heat for a minute or two each side, or wrap them in foil and heat in the oven until soft and warm.
  4. Assemble the Gyros: Spread a generous spoonful of tzatziki sauce over each warm pita. Top with cooked lamb, followed by sliced red onion, chopped cucumber, diced tomatoes, and crumbled feta cheese.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the gyros and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Serve immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef or a lamb-beef blend if preferred.
  • For extra flavor and texture, lightly grill the pita bread on the skillet or grill before assembling the gyros.
  • Tzatziki sauce can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
