Description

This homemade wonton soup features tender ground chicken-filled wontons in a flavorful, aromatic chicken broth enhanced with ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. Paired with fresh baby bok choy and optional mushrooms, this comforting Asian-inspired dish is perfect for a nourishing meal that’s quick to prepare and delightful to savor.

Ingredients

Scale

Wonton Filling

  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper
  • 30-40 wonton wrappers

Soup Base & Vegetables

  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups baby bok choy or spinach
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Green onions and fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the wontons: In a mixing bowl, combine ground chicken, finely chopped green onions, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Fill and shape the wontons: Place a small spoonful of the chicken mixture in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold the wrapper into a triangle shape, and press firmly to seal the edges. Then, bring the opposite corners of the triangle together to form a neat bundle, ensuring the filling is secure inside.
  3. Prepare the soup base: In a large pot, heat the chicken broth over medium heat. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic to the broth, stirring gently to combine all flavorings evenly.
  4. Simmer vegetables: Allow the broth to simmer gently for 5 to 7 minutes so the flavors meld. Add the baby bok choy and optional sliced mushrooms into the broth. Season with salt and pepper according to taste.
  5. Cook the wontons: Carefully drop the prepared wontons into the simmering soup. Let them cook for 4 to 5 minutes, or until they float to the surface and the chicken filling is fully cooked through.
  6. Serve: Ladle the hot soup into bowls, making sure each serving contains both wontons and vegetables. Garnish with additional chopped green onions and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute ground chicken with finely chopped tofu or a mushroom mixture and use vegetable broth.
  • Wonton wrappers can be found in most Asian grocery stores or the refrigerated section of well-stocked supermarkets.
  • Ensure wontons are fully sealed to prevent filling from leaking out during cooking.
  • Adjust seasoning and spice levels by adding chili oil or fresh chili slices for a spicy kick.
  • Leftover soup can be refrigerated and reheated, but wontons are best enjoyed fresh to maintain their texture.
