Ingredients
Scale
Hamburger Steaks
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Onion Gravy
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 small onion, chopped (for gravy)
Instructions
- Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is evenly incorporated.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 patties depending on your preferred size for the hamburger steaks.
- Cook Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties and cook them for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are browned on the outside and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Onions for Gravy: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes or until softened and translucent, stirring occasionally.
- Add Flour: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste and create a roux base.
- Add Liquid and Seasonings: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add soy sauce, dried thyme, and onion powder. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer Patties with Gravy: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the onion gravy over them. Let everything simmer together for an additional 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the patties to reheat.
- Serve: Plate the hamburger steaks topped with the onion gravy. Serve alongside mashed potatoes or your choice of steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, substitute regular bread crumbs with gluten-free bread crumbs and use a gluten-free flour alternative for thickening the gravy.
- Adjust the number of patties according to size preference; smaller patties will cook faster.
- Make sure the skillet is properly heated before adding the patties to achieve a good sear.
- Leftover hamburger steaks and gravy can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
- Adding a splash of red wine to the gravy can enhance its depth of flavor.
