Ingredients
Scale
Cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
Filling & Topping:
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping (like Cool Whip)
- 1 package chocolate sandwich cookies (crushed)
Decorations:
- Gummy worms
- Candy pumpkins
- Tombstone-shaped cookies
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven according to the temperature guided on the chocolate cake mix package to ensure proper baking.
- Prepare the cake batter: Follow the instructions on the cake mix box to make the chocolate cake batter by mixing cake mix with the required ingredients.
- Bake the cake: Pour the batter into a 9×13-inch pan and bake it according to the box instructions. Once done, allow the cake to cool slightly, about 10 minutes.
- Poke holes in the cake: Using the handle of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the surface of the warm cake, spacing them about an inch apart to allow the filling to seep in.
- Pour sweetened condensed milk: Evenly pour the 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk over the entire cake, letting it soak deep into the holes for a moist texture.
- Cool completely: Let the cake cool down fully to room temperature to set before adding the topping.
- Spread whipped topping: Generously spread the 8 oz container of whipped topping evenly over the cooled cake to create a creamy layer.
- Add cookie crumb ‘dirt’: Sprinkle crushed chocolate sandwich cookies over the whipped topping to mimic dirt.
- Decorate the graveyard: Arrange gummy worms, candy pumpkins, and tombstone-shaped cookies on top for a spooky graveyard effect.
- Refrigerate before serving: Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld and the cake to firm up before serving.
Notes
- Use room temperature ingredients when preparing the cake mix for better texture.
- Ensure the cake is still warm but not hot when poking holes so the condensed milk absorbs well.
- For best flavor, decorate the cake just before serving to keep gummy worms fresh.
- This cake keeps well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
- Can be made a day ahead; just refrigerate and decorate before serving.
