Ingredients
Scale
Rice and Spices
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- Salt to taste
Liquids and Aromatics
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Instructions
- Rinse the rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch and prevent clumping during cooking.
- Sauté the garlic: Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden, being careful not to burn it.
- Add rice and turmeric: Stir in the rinsed rice and turmeric powder, coating the rice evenly with the oil and spices for about a minute to toast slightly and develop flavor.
- Add water and salt: Pour in the 2 cups of water, season with salt to your taste, and bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
- Simmer the rice: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer gently for 15-18 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Fluff and serve: Remove the pot from heat and let it stand covered for 5 minutes. Then fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains before serving warm.
Notes
- Rinsing the rice removes excess starch and prevents it from becoming gummy.
- Adjust the amount of garlic to your preference for more or less pungency.
- You can substitute water with vegetable or chicken broth for added flavor.
- Covering the pot tightly during simmering helps trap steam and cook the rice evenly.
- Allowing the rice to rest off the heat prevents it from becoming mushy.
