Dough Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for dough)
Garlic Butter Topping
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth, or use a stand mixer on medium speed to knead for 5 minutes.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until it doubles in size.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, and chopped fresh parsley to make the garlic butter mixture.
- Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and arrange them evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Brush the tops generously with the prepared garlic butter and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
- Second Rise: Cover the rolls and let them rise again for 30 minutes until they become puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
- Finish with Butter: Remove the hot rolls from the oven and brush them with the remaining melted butter for an extra rich and glossy finish before serving.
Notes
- Use warm milk at about 110°F to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
- For a stronger garlic flavor, you can increase the amount of minced garlic in the garlic butter mixture.
- If you prefer a softer crust, cover the rolls with aluminum foil for the first 10 minutes of baking.
- Parmesan cheese topping is optional but adds a delightful salty, cheesy layer.
- Ensure the dough rises in a draft-free, warm environment to achieve the best results.
- Brush rolls with melted butter immediately after baking to keep them soft and enhance flavor.
