Description

This French Dip Biscuit Bake is a comforting American casserole combining tender roast beef, caramelized onions, and melty provolone cheese baked atop flaky refrigerated biscuits. Served with warm au jus for dipping, it’s an easy and flavorful main course perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuits

  • 1 (16 oz) can refrigerated biscuits

Beef Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ pound deli roast beef, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Cheese and Toppings

  • 1½ cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Au Jus

  • 1 (10.5 oz) can beef consommé or au jus sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the thinly sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  3. Combine Beef and Seasonings: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, dried thyme, and black pepper into the caramelized onions. Add chopped roast beef and stir until the beef is heated through. Then remove the skillet from heat.
  4. Prepare Biscuit Mixture: Cut each refrigerated biscuit into quarters and place them in a large mixing bowl. Add the beef and onion mixture along with 1 cup of the shredded cheese. Gently toss everything together to combine evenly.
  5. Assemble in Baking Dish: Transfer the biscuit and beef mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup shredded cheese over the top. Brush the melted butter evenly over the cheese layer to promote browning and flavor.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through in the center.
  7. Warm Au Jus: While the bake is in the oven, gently heat the beef consommé or au jus sauce in a small saucepan over low heat until warm, ready for dipping.
  8. Serve: Once baked, allow the biscuit bake to rest for 5 minutes to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot alongside the warm au jus for dipping.

Notes

  • You can substitute homemade biscuits if preferred for a more artisanal touch.
  • For a deeper savory flavor, add a splash of soy sauce to the au jus before warming.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven for best texture.
  • Try using mozzarella for a milder cheese or provolone for a more robust flavor.
