Description

Coffee Jelly is a classic Japanese dessert that combines the rich, bold flavor of coffee with a delicate jelly texture. This refreshing and easy-to-make dessert features gelatin-set coffee cubes served chilled with a drizzle of creamy heavy cream or sweetened condensed milk, perfect for a cool treat or a unique coffee experience.

Ingredients

Scale

Coffee Jelly

  • 2 cups strong brewed coffee (or espresso)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons powdered gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

For Serving

  • ½ cup heavy cream or sweetened condensed milk (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Bloom the Gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the powdered gelatin over 2 tablespoons of cold water and let it sit for about 5 minutes to allow it to bloom and absorb the moisture.
  2. Heat Coffee Mixture: Meanwhile, in a saucepan over medium heat, combine 2 cups of strong brewed coffee and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Stir gently until the sugar completely dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  3. Dissolve Gelatin: Remove the saucepan from heat. Add the bloomed gelatin to the hot coffee mixture and stir thoroughly until the gelatin is fully dissolved and evenly incorporated.
  4. Chill the Mixture: Pour the coffee and gelatin mixture into a square or rectangular dish. Allow it to cool to room temperature, then cover it and refrigerate for at least 3 to 4 hours, or until the jelly is firm.
  5. Cut and Serve: Once set, cut the coffee jelly into cubes. Serve the cubes in dessert glasses and top each serving with a drizzle of heavy cream or a spoonful of sweetened condensed milk for added richness and sweetness.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free option, substitute the heavy cream with coconut cream or almond milk.
  • Adjust the coffee strength and sugar level to your taste preference; stronger coffee gives a more intense flavor.
  • This dessert is best enjoyed chilled and is perfect for warm weather or as a unique coffee treat.
