Description

A classic Caesar Salad featuring crisp romaine lettuce, crunchy homemade croutons, and a rich, creamy Caesar dressing made from mayonnaise, garlic, anchovy paste, and lemon juice. This refreshing salad is perfect as a light meal or a delicious side dish and can be prepared in about 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Salad

  • 1 large head Romaine Lettuce, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 cup Croutons (homemade or store-bought)

Croutons

  • 4 slices Bread, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil

Caesar Dressing

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Anchovy Paste
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice, fresh
  • Freshly ground Black Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preparation of Lettuce: Wash the romaine lettuce thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or grit. Dry it completely using a salad spinner or clean kitchen towels to ensure it is crisp and ready for the salad.
  2. Making Croutons: Cube the bread into bite-sized pieces. Toss the bread cubes in olive oil until evenly coated. Arrange them on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-15 minutes or until the croutons turn golden brown and crispy. Remove and let cool.
  3. Preparing the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, minced garlic, anchovy paste, and fresh lemon juice until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add black pepper to taste and whisk again to combine all flavors perfectly.
  4. Tossing the Salad: Place the dried romaine lettuce in a large mixing bowl. Pour the prepared Caesar dressing over the lettuce and toss well to coat each leaf evenly with the dressing.
  5. Finishing Touch: Sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the dressed lettuce. Add the crispy croutons on top to add a delightful crunch to the salad.
  6. Serving: Serve the Caesar salad immediately to enjoy maximum freshness and crunchiness. It pairs beautifully with grilled chicken or seafood for a fuller meal if desired.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free bread for croutons or omit them entirely.
  • Anchovy paste can be omitted for a milder flavor or to accommodate dietary restrictions.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan for the best flavor and texture.
  • Croutons can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Salad is best served immediately to maintain crispness.
