Description

These Christmas Fried Sliced Mushrooms with Ranch are a crispy, flavorful appetizer perfect for holiday gatherings. Fresh mushroom slices are coated in a seasoned flour, egg, and breadcrumb mixture, then fried to golden perfection. Served with creamy ranch dressing and optionally garnished with fresh parsley, they’re an irresistible festive treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Mushrooms

  • 500 g fresh mushrooms, cleaned and sliced

Coating Mixture

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for frying (enough to cover 1/2 inch of pan bottom)

Serving

  • 1/2 cup store-bought or homemade ranch dressing
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coating station: In one bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. In a third bowl, place the seasoned breadcrumbs to complete your dredging setup.
  2. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a large frying pan to about 1/2 inch depth and heat over medium-high until shimmering and hot enough for frying.
  3. Coat the mushroom slices: Take each mushroom slice and first dredge it thoroughly in the seasoned flour mixture. Next, dip it into the egg and milk mix to moisten, then press it firmly into the breadcrumbs to ensure an even and complete coating.
  4. Fry in batches: Carefully place the coated mushroom slices into the hot oil, frying in batches to prevent crowding, which could lower the oil temperature and cause soggy results.
  5. Cook until golden brown: Fry each side of the mushrooms for 2 to 3 minutes or until they are a deep golden brown and crisp. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried mushrooms to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. Repeat frying: Continue frying the remaining coated mushroom slices until all are cooked and crispy.
  7. Arrange and serve: Arrange the fried mushrooms on a serving platter. Serve immediately for best texture.
  8. Add ranch and garnish: Offer a small bowl of ranch dressing on the side for dipping. Optionally, sprinkle fresh parsley over the top for a festive, vibrant touch.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough (about 350°F or 175°C) before frying to achieve a crispy coating.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to maintain the oil temperature and crispy results.
  • Drain mushrooms on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them crisp.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best texture; button or cremini mushrooms work well.
  • For gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
