Description

Delight in these Chocolate Hazelnut Rolls made with flaky puff pastry, rich chocolate hazelnut spread, and crunchy hazelnuts. Perfect as a sweet breakfast treat or an indulgent dessert, these rolls are easy to make and bake to golden perfection, offering a delightful combination of creamy, nutty, and buttery flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (such as Nutella)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped hazelnuts

Topping

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Roll out puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle shape to create an even base for the filling.
  3. Spread chocolate hazelnut spread: Evenly spread the chocolate hazelnut spread over the pastry, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges to prevent overflow during baking.
  4. Add chopped hazelnuts: Sprinkle the finely chopped hazelnuts evenly on top of the chocolate spread to add texture and flavor.
  5. Roll and slice: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the puff pastry into a log, then slice it into 8 equal pieces to form the individual rolls.
  6. Arrange and brush: Place the rolls cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to achieve a shiny, golden finish and sprinkle coarse sugar over them if using for added crunch and sweetness.
  7. Bake: Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown, indicating that they are cooked through and beautifully crisped.
  8. Cool and dust: Allow the rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for a delicate, sweet finish before serving warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For an enhanced nutty flavor, toast the hazelnuts briefly before chopping and adding to the filling.
  • These rolls can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a few minutes to refresh their crispness.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt on top before baking for a balanced sweet-salty contrast.
