Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Filling
- 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (such as Nutella)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped hazelnuts
Topping
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Roll out puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle shape to create an even base for the filling.
- Spread chocolate hazelnut spread: Evenly spread the chocolate hazelnut spread over the pastry, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges to prevent overflow during baking.
- Add chopped hazelnuts: Sprinkle the finely chopped hazelnuts evenly on top of the chocolate spread to add texture and flavor.
- Roll and slice: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the puff pastry into a log, then slice it into 8 equal pieces to form the individual rolls.
- Arrange and brush: Place the rolls cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to achieve a shiny, golden finish and sprinkle coarse sugar over them if using for added crunch and sweetness.
- Bake: Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown, indicating that they are cooked through and beautifully crisped.
- Cool and dust: Allow the rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for a delicate, sweet finish before serving warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For an enhanced nutty flavor, toast the hazelnuts briefly before chopping and adding to the filling.
- These rolls can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a few minutes to refresh their crispness.
- Add a pinch of sea salt on top before baking for a balanced sweet-salty contrast.
