Ingredients
Scale
Produce
- 16-18 cherry tomatoes
- 16-18 fresh basil leaves
Dairy
- 1 (12-oz) tub marinated mozzarella balls
Condiments
- homemade balsamic vinegar reduction
Other
- 16-18 toothpicks
Instructions
- Add cherry tomato: Start by skewering one cherry tomato onto a toothpick. This will form the top of the appetizer.
- Add basil leaf: Fold a fresh basil leaf in half or into thirds, then slide it onto the toothpick beneath the cherry tomato to add aroma and flavor.
- Add mozzarella ball: Skewer a marinated mozzarella ball on the end of the toothpick. For a vertical presentation, first place the mozzarella ball on the platter and adjust it until it’s stable, then carefully insert the toothpick from the top through the tomato and basil into the mozzarella to create a standing skewer.
- Drizzle with balsamic reduction: Just before serving, generously drizzle the skewers with homemade balsamic vinegar reduction. Serve any extra reduction on the side so guests can add more to their taste.
- Storage: Keep any leftover skewers refrigerated to maintain freshness. They are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored for up to 1-2 days.
Notes
- Choose ripe cherry tomatoes for the best flavor and texture.
- Fresh basil leaves add the most aroma; avoid wilted leaves.
- Use high-quality marinated mozzarella balls for extra flavor.
- You can prepare the skewers a few hours ahead but add the balsamic reduction just before serving to keep them fresh.
- For a sweeter balsamic reduction, simmer balsamic vinegar with a pinch of sugar until thickened.
