Ingredients
Scale
Blueberry Compote Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on sweetness preference)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1/4 cup water or orange juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thicker consistency)
Instructions
- Prepare the ingredients: If using fresh blueberries, rinse them thoroughly. If using frozen blueberries, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand.
- Combine ingredients in saucepan: In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, and water (or orange juice).
- Cook the blueberries: Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the blueberries begin to break down and release their juices, about 5-7 minutes.
- Optional crushing: For a smoother compote, gently crush some blueberries with a spoon or potato masher as they cook.
- Thicken the compote (optional): Dissolve cornstarch in a tablespoon of water and stir into the blueberry mixture. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until thickened.
- Add flavorings: Stir in lemon zest (if using) and vanilla extract (if desired) once the compote reaches your preferred thickness.
- Cool and serve: Remove from heat and let the compote cool slightly. It will thicken further as it cools. Serve warm or chilled over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, yogurt, or enjoy on its own.
Notes
- Adjust sugar amount depending on the sweetness of your blueberries and personal preference.
- Using lemon zest and vanilla extract enhances the flavor but can be omitted.
- Cornstarch is optional for those who prefer a thicker compote.
- The compote keeps well refrigerated for up to one week.
- Use orange juice instead of water for a citrusy twist.
