Description

This Better Than Anything Cake is a luscious, chocolatey dessert featuring a moist devil’s food cake soaked in a rich sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup mixture. Topped with a creamy chocolate pudding and whipped topping blend, then finished with crushed Oreos and extra chocolate sauce for a decadent treat sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 box devil’s food cake mix plus ingredients needed to make it (usually eggs, oil, water as per box instructions)

Chocolate Milk Soak

  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 3/4 cup chocolate syrup

Topping

  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 5.9 ounce box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup (plus more for serving)
  • 16 ounces whipped topping (e.g. Cool Whip)

Garnish

  • 20 crushed Oreos

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake: Mix and prepare the devil’s food cake according to the package directions. Bake as instructed until fully cooked.
  2. Make Chocolate Soak: While the cake is baking, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and 3/4 cup chocolate syrup until smooth and set aside.
  3. Poach Cake with Soak: Once cake is baked and still warm, poke holes all over the top using a fork to allow the soak to permeate deeply.
  4. Apply Chocolate Soak: Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk mixture evenly over the cake surface, then use a spatula to gently spread and ensure the liquid soaks into the holes without running off the edges.
  5. Cool Cake: Allow the cake to cool completely to room temperature.
  6. Prepare Topping Base: Whisk together the whole milk and instant chocolate pudding mix until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
  7. Add Chocolate Syrup: Whisk in 1/4 cup chocolate syrup until fully incorporated.
  8. Fold in Whipped Topping: Gradually mix in the whipped topping, whisking just enough to combine completely; some lumps are acceptable.
  9. Spread Topping: Smooth the whipped topping mixture generously over the cooled cake surface. Cover the cake with plastic wrap.
  10. Chill Cake: Refrigerate the cake for at least 6 hours or preferably overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the topping to set firmly.
  11. Garnish and Serve: Before serving, garnish the cake with crushed Oreos on top and optionally drizzle additional chocolate syrup on individual slices for extra decadence.

Notes

  • Use the devil’s food cake mix ingredients as directed on the box for best results.
  • Poking holes while the cake is warm ensures maximum absorption of the chocolate soak.
  • The pudding topping may appear slightly lumpy but will set smoothly after chilling.
  • Refrigerate for at least 6 hours to allow the cake to fully soak and topping to firm up.
  • Extra chocolate syrup can be served alongside individual slices for added richness.
  • Use chilled whole milk for best pudding texture.
